I'm going to start blogging again soon. I actually don't think what I've been doing before was really blogging, save for a few entries (i.e. Robeks vs. Jamba Juice). Blogging to me is a sort of journal, though most will try and make it seem it's something else.

The difference about a journal and blogging, though, is that with journals you are writing really personal stuff, stuff that upsets you, people you enjoy, how your day was. But in that same regard, blogs are quite similar.

I remember once way back when I used to scope out the Star Wars blogs over at StarWars.com, a user said a blog is like your own personal newspaper in the sense that you create your own articles, and I guess that's true. When I write a blog I tried to write it somewhat like a article, especially when I used to do reviews. But then blogs can also be about my own personal life, which could seem like I'm writing a journal but really your writing an article about your day, or at least, that's how I try to go about it. When I write about my day I try to pick out specific things and speak about them and hope to create discussion. At least, that's what I'm going to attempt to do from here on out.

I also would like to keep people updated on what I'm doing because really it doesn't seem like I've been doing much lately. The Devil's Company sort of died and other projects seem like they be falling through but I'm actually getting some things together that will hopefully set off a whole streamline of projects down the pipeline. We'll see though. Only time will tell.

Casey Veggies's Debut Music Video

The shoot went really well, I had some fun. I had worked with Casey only once on the trailer I did for him a few months back but we had only spoken for a little bit then. This time I spent the whole day with him. He and his crew over at Peas & Carrots are really dope people.

In the morning we shot at Kenneth Hahn Park to shoot the beginning of the music video, which will be this stylized intro that is a sort of extension of what we did in the trailer. Actually, my day started out a little earlier than that. I realized in the very early morning before the shoot that I didn't have the lyrics to the song so I went to his myspace, listened to it and jotted down what I thought the lyrics were so when I got to the park the first thing I did was hand off what I wrote and Casey corrected it. I'm proud to say I got most of it right :-D!

The shoot at Kenneth Hahn went really smooth and fast. We only spent an hour shooting there and then we left to hit up Kingsbury where the majority of the video would be shot. After a quick bite I spent a good half hour looking for parking because we could only get meter parking. But then we came to realize we could have parked in the back of Kingsbury all along, that was a big waste of time. Once we finally got things settled we started shooting (sorry for the lack of photos, there may be some later on the Peas & Carrot blog).

I really like shooting and directing music videos, sometimes even moreso than shooting short films. Actually, I think what I like about music videos is that it's someone elses art that I get to make visual. I'm not sure if I find as much enjoyment in writing my own work and then directing it, rather, I like adapting other people's work and then directing it (like most directors). While this video is actually going to be somewhat simple, with other videos and can really step out creatively.

I really enjoy the song we're doing, it's got a really laid back flow and I think it's a good way to debut Casey's second mixtape and first official music video.

We're trying to go live with this video next Sunday. Whoopi should be editing but I may end up doing a bit of editing too.

I'll try to actually keep up with my blog so I can keep my readers update (I know I have a few out there :-P)

Oh also, after the shoot day was over I got my first flat tire! How fun! AAA actually came pretty quickly so it wasn't so bad. I'm slowly realizing how much money it'll be just to maintain my car. I had to fix my brakes last week ... get a tune up the other day ... and now I need a new tire. Good thing I have a summer job now :-D!

Apple Certified

I'm thinking about getting Apple certified, which means taking a test and getting a little slip of paper that says I'm awesome at all things Final Cut, which helps a lot for when I'm going out looking for jobs and all that junk. Today I bought Final Cut Pro 6: Professional Editing in Final Cut Studio 2 by Diana Weynand. I haven't read it yet but I will start to study the first chapter or so tomorrow. Hopefully it won't be too difficult to get through :-D

Also today I applied to a few jobs. Jamba Juice and Barnes and Nobles.

I have been seeing a lot of cops around lately, pulling people over left, right and center. I'm just waiting for my number to be called. At first, I thought it was just because it was the end of the month blues and all the cops had to make up their monthly quota for tickets but it's been a few days into May and there are still a lot of cops around lurking and pulling people over. I've seen over a dozen people pulled over since last week and four alone in the pass day. While shooting The Devil's Company two of the crew members were pulled over (they had a broken headlight).

Oh, by the way I have a car. I forgot to post a blog about that. A '94 Nissan Maxima. I'll be sure to post something about it later.

Busy Weekend ... Busy Week

After filming this weekend I helped another one of my friends with her short, which includes one of my actresses (Resa Barton).

The pictures following are from the third day of shooting, which was long but quite fun. I nearly killed myself, falling asleep on the freeway ride back. I should have just crashed when they offered :(

Advance Review - Adventureland

Last night, I went to an advance screening of the latest film from Greg Mottola (director of Superbad): Adventureland. I must say I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. I think going into a film with little or no expectations is the best way to go into anything. I’m starting to agree with Jeff Cannata that trailers somewhat ruin the movie-going experience. Some of the TV Spots nearly ruined some of the jokes in the film for me. In Adventureland a young college grad who needs to earn some moola for the summer for his next year at grad school finds work at a local amusement park where he has a bunch of, dare I say it, adventures. The film is being advertised as a comedy of sorts, even being compared to Superbad (in the case of the director) but I would not list this film so much as a “comedic movie” but more of a “coming-of-age/feel good movie.” The best part of the film was probably the performances from Jesse Eisenberg (James) and the adult cast and the weaker points came from the final moments of the film and the lackluster performance from Kristen Stewart.

First and foremost, Adventureland is very well directed with a well-written script. It’s not comedic genius or Oscar-winning but it’s a very solid script. Some of the character arcs were a bit underdeveloped, but the jokes were spot on at times, there are some definite LOL moments. It just didn’t have much to set it above anything else in its genre. Still, it was a pleasure to watch and I really enjoyed the development that did happen with some of the characters, however subtle it was. Everyone in the cast, aside from Kristen, was fantastic and spot on and I loved their performances. Bill Hader as the owner of Adventureland was fantastic. One day I wish to have a boss like him. Newcomer Jesse Eisenberg carried the film on his shoulders for me.

When I first watched Jesse Eisenberg in the opening of the film I definitely thought of Michael Cera. They both play around with the awkward humor bit (or perhaps that’s just the director, who also has credits in Arrested Development, starring Michael Cera). While they both have similar humor and comedic timing, I feel Eisenberg brings something new to his awkward humor. He wasn’t exactly anti-social or self-conscious; in fact, his character was quite cool and well rounded. Perhaps, though, that’s a bad thing because it leaves little room for the character to arc. Still though, Eisenberg did very well in the role and was extremely likeable and definitely watchable.

The only thing I’ve seen Kristen Stewart before Adventureland was in the trailer of Catch That Kid, her cameo in Jumper and most recently, of course, Twilight. Her performance in Adventureland was so very similar to her performance in Twilight, almost all the way down to the beat. She stumbles over her lines when her character is feeling uncomfortable, which worked for Bella Swan in Twilight, but not for Em Lewin in Adventureland. It was really the nuances of her performance that nagged at me because, yes I’ll get flamed for saying this but … I liked Twilight and saw it twice in theaters (burn me at the stake why don’t you). Because I saw that movie twice I was able to really pick apart the way Kristen handled her role and one of the things I enjoyed the most was her nuances like pulling up her hair out of her face and stuttering over uncomfortable lines or having a monotonous tone because, to me, that was the character of Bella I imagined from the book but in Adventureland all of those same things she did irked me so much. I really hope this doesn’t meant that she’s a bad actress and whenever she plays a character she’s just playing herself because I think I really want to like her, there is something about her. But in this film I really just didn’t feel much for her character even though I thought Em was written very well.

I really liked the relationship between the two leads (James & Em), but I felt the chemistry between Eisenberg and Stewart was lacking at some key moments and that was mostly the fault of Kristen herself. But Kristen did have some moments that made me smiling and say “awww” inside my heart, especially at [SPOILER] when they first kiss and then break apart and she shyly looks away [END SPOILER]. But all and all I don’t think I could feel the two-way relationship. All the emotion I felt was from Eisenberg’s character and the only way I felt anything for Stewart’s character is because she was given such good lines to work with but whenever she pulled the Bella-Twilight performances I was immediately aware that I was watching a performance. Also, since I’m on the subject of the relationship between the two leads, I found myself comparing the two to Josh Peck and Olivia Thirlby in The Wackness, which is a movie I enjoyed a whole lot more than this one (not to knock it or anything but The Wackness and just pure dopeness).

Another weak point of the film is how it wrapped up, especially that very last shot and last scene, which was a bit anticlimactic, for me. The ending was certainly decent and safe but it didn’t have the same balls as The Wackness did. Also the revelation that the main character has is revealed in a pretty lame way, I thought. The rest of the film was really great though, it just had a bit of a rocky ending for me.
So all and all I would recommend this film, as a rental. I don’t know how I feel about comedies and watching them in the theater. I can never see a reason why. The cinematography was decent but nothing so mind-blowing that you just have to see it on the big screen. If I hadn’t gone to an advance screening for free I would not have paid $8-$12 dollars to watch it. MY VERDIT: A GREAT RENTAL or a lazy afternoon with friends if you have an extra few bucks for a matinee.

Oh and I was pretty irked that Lisa P’s best friend Kelly was the only black person in the film and she played the part of the “sidekick” to the hot white chick. That just irked me a little bit.

Watchmen Review ...

The only differences were that I DID like the new ending, even more than the one in the graphic novel. Also she didn't mention the fights scenes but have to say I did not like them. They were not awesome if you think of them in the context of Watchmen. The only superhero is Dr. Manhattan. The rest are normal people who train themselves to be awesome. Those fight scenes were highly choreographed and fake. That was possibly one of the worst elements of the film. Fight scenes like those belong in Spider-Man or X-Men ... comic movies like that with superhuman characters. The most realistic fighting came from Rorchach but everyone else was way too heightened.

Azden SGM 1X & Audio-Technica 25' XLR Cable!

I'm getting really semi-pro with my equipment now. First I got my DVX100B and then a Manfrotto tripod. Yesterday I just made a purchase for a Azden SGM (Shotgun Mic) for my camera along with a 25 ft XLR cable for booming situations. My order should be in at around Tuesday of next week. I'll be sure to take photographs and do some test.

Speaking of test. My Final Cut Pro 6 is spazzing out again. I was trying to do a upscaled HD test with my DVX100B with a 2.35:1 mask but Final Cut won't let me turn it on. I think it's the editing Gods telling me I need to purchase my own copy ... but I really don't have the money. One day I will, of course, but right now I just can't.

I think I went a little overboard. The character in the script has to fight naked and I decided to try and showcase this by fighting in boxers, which I soon realized was not necessary at all.

So a week ago I was offered weed for the first time at a film shoot for my buddy Damian. It was quite funny. It went something like this:

INT. DAMIAN'S COUSIN'S LIVING ROOM - DAY

ANTOINE, innocent and unassuming, reads a HOW-TO COMIC BOOK, across from RACHEL, beautiful actress, jabbing away at her phone.

A YOUNG POT HEAD, shuffles out of the bathroom in looks over to Antoine with a maniacal smile.

YOUNG POT HEAD
You want to smoke some weed?

Antoine looks up from the book, somewhat confused.

ANTOINE
What?

YOUNG POT HEAD
You want to blaze?

Antoine clutches the comic book.

ANTOINE
Nah ...

ANTOINE (V.O.)
... I don't smoke weed.

YOUNG POT HEAD
Ah, can't do that on the job, huh?

ANTOINE
Yeah, somethin' like that ...

YOUNG POT HEAD
Aight ...

The young pot head trots away with a slight limp. Antoine catches the distinctive smell on her.

He turns to Rachel.

ANTOINE
You know, that's the first
time I've ever been offered
weed in my life.

RACHEL
Really?

ANTOINE
Yup.

Antoine goes back to his book; Rachel, to her phone.

Catch Up Starst Now: My Thoughts on Oscar Shorts (Live Action and Animation)

A few weeks back I watched the Oscar Nominated Shorts (Live Action & Animation), which cost me a butt-load because I took my brother along and he's broke.

This was possibly my favorite of the whole animation bunch. A great cautionary tale without being on the nose and preachy. Beautifully hand-drawn animation, to boot.

This is the first one we all saw. It was cute and I lol'd while watching it but it didn't completely capture me as much as I wanted it to.

OKTAPODI
This was the shortest one of the shorts, rounding out to a simple two minutes, and that was for the better. It had a quick laughs and quick beats and a great ending.

PRESTO
This wonderful short by Pixar probably had the best comedic timing but I felt it went on for too long. It was too clever. Great joke after great gag after great quip but I needed a break. Maybe there was just too much slapstick.

THIS WAY UP
A lot of people are really eatin' this one up. I liked it but it wasn't fantastic for me and I'm not sure why. It was fun and entertaining though.

Note: They even showed some of the honorable mention, which were all good but I could see how they didn't get nominated. My brother's favorite was one of these though but I felt it was a really preaching cautionary tale, unlike La Maison En Petits Cubes which didn't beat its message over my head at all.

LIVE ACTION SHORTS

AUF DER STRECKE (ON THE LINE)
I love this short so much but it's ending annoys me very much. I'm so glad that this got nominated! I first saw it at the Student Academy Awards, which is like the Oscars for student films, and it was certainly the best (it won for best foreign student film). Besides its ending the constant fade out and fade ins annoyed me as well but it's a great tale about guilt. MUST SEE!

MANON ON ASPHALT
This was my favorite by far! Great great great! It's about a young woman who dies and recounts all the things she has done and hasn't done and how her death would affect her friends and family. So great!

NEW BOY
The weakest of the bunch. Not bad, but not great. I'm not even sure how this got nominated. It's entirely mediocre.

THE PIG
The funniest of the bunch but I felt bored by it at times and I don't feel the ending with the blind patient was explored enough but maybe it didn't need to be.

SPIELZEUGLAND (TOYLAND)
I didn't find this to be that special, although I hear critics are eating it up like candy. It's okay, it's good, but it really isn't all that great and while I didn't expect the ending I found it very predictable. Plus, this World War II story has been told before. Everything about the Jews during WWII was done best in Schindler's List. I didn't feel I needed this film anymore.

I definitely enjoyed this and I will be going next year. I love living in Los Angeles. This was only in select theaters and if I lived in the Midwest somewhere I would never have gotten the chance to see some very beautiful films, both animated and not.

The animations were definitely better than the live action but I loved them all.

I think it's inevitable. My "And He Gets The Girl" music video might be taken off of YouTube soon. Almost all the other videos have been taken off except for two and the newer ones. Now I'm on the top of the list with the most views. Eek! But I think I know why mine is still on YouTube. When the copyright owners look for things with their music they only listen for the first ten or twenty seconds. I don't think the music comes in until thirty seconds in (UPDATE: it starts at 0:44). I have my opening title and the opening sequence.

For me, Barrack Hussein Obama transcends the mere fact that he is the first African-American president. He is so much more than that. He is an inspiration for so many.

For me, he is not just a president that has made history. The fact that he is African-American does not hit me as hard as it does to those old folks who knew true struggle for equal rights.

For me, I feel foolish for thinking I've struggled at all for the color of my skin. For them, for my generation's grandmother's and grandfather's ... this day was for them.

Do you remember when it was officially announced that Obama was our president-elect? Don't lie and tell me when you saw his smiling face it made you tear up or it hit your heart hard because it wasn't that. It wasn't his victory nor was it ours. It hits you most when you see those old black people, those original political activist crying and tearing up. When you saw Jesse Jackson breakdown there was just so much behind that. When you hear Maya Angelou or Coretta Scott King speak about how it was back then and how much Obama's inauguration means to them now, you know deep down that it's their victory. What they see is Martin Luther King's dream being fulfilled, where a presidental candidate was voted not by the color of his skin but the content of his character.

For me, I will never feel what my elders feel for this victory, for this day, but I can certainly celebrate and clamor with my fist in the air: "Yes We Did!" :-D

Their dreams have been fulfilled. This is their victory. Theirs and so many others.

Woke up relatively early today.

Whoopi and I went to the Coffee Bean in Westwood to meet up with a guy from craigslist who was selling a DVX100B (video camera). We were going to meet up with him to check out the camera before I bought it (below is a picture of my check list). It was cool. The guy was chill and the camera was operating well, video and audio alike. I didn't have the money with me because banks are closed Sundays but I'll be picking up the camera on Tuesday. I'm very excited for it. But I did buy something off the guy so he would know I was serious about buying the camera.

Along with the camera he was selling a tripod. At first, I said I was only interested in the camera but then I realized that my tripod had broke many months ago so then I decided to buy his since it was already apart of the "package." I don't know much about tripods but this one looks really sturdy and I messed around with it and it feels really steady. Plus, the only other tripod I had was a generic $20 RadioShack tripod, so this was a big upgrade for me. This one shouldn't break on me in two years (like my RadioShack tripod did).

I made a pretty big dinner today. I made some fried potatoes, brocolli and fish sandwhiches with tomato, lettuce and mayo.

I'm also working on my next blog which will be about this equation: Facebook = Vimeo > MySpace = YouTube.

You can think over what that might mean until I get that post up :-D

I'm also pretty pissed right now at married couples. I've always been angry with married couples. None of them sitck together. When I get married I will make sure to stick it out with my mate. Seriously though, it's ridiculous how many people are getting divorced right not because of financial issues. It's as if they completely disregarded the "for better or for worse" line. Marriage has been belittled to nothingness over the years. Sure, at least most of them aren't forced and arranged like back in the day but come on people, use your free will well, don't waste it!

Thanks to the recession, Circuit City has been the most recent company to go under. Saturday, January 17, 2009 was its first day of liquidation which means "everything must go." I heard about this report on Friday on the news but I never thought to go to Circuit City to get a deal until I got home from work and saw someone's Twitter that said "30% off everything!" I rushed down in my grandmother's car to the Circuit City by my old high school and stood in a really long line to purchase ...

My previous ones felt more like metal and sturdy but this one feels a little plasticy around the edges. I'll be sure to take extra care with it tough. Last Friday I was invited to the Totally Rad Show Live at the Dolby Laboratories!

In the show they discussed their top Films, Video Games and TV Shows of 2008 among other things. They even had a special treat for us! We got to see Star Wars in 3D! That's right 3D! They are making the original Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope) in 3D! Or at least Dolby did a six minute test of it and it's still in development! But it was great! (Below is a picture of the Dolby-Guy who let us see Star Wars in 3-effing-D!)

Pre-Production Starts Jan 20th

So I haven't blogged in almost a fortnight. After reading some of my blog back when I started I realized how much I'm attached the pictures and photographs to enhance my blog. I have to learn to just deal with text. I still don't have a new point-and-shoot, I'm not sure when I'll get that.

There are some major updates on The Devil's Company which is now being subtitled with "Prologue." Pre-Production officially starts Jan 20th. We may have a combat instructor and in a few weeks we'll be going to the shooting range to train up to be assassins :-D. Sunday we'll be having a first read through. If you are interested in being on the crew just hit me up with an e-mail at antoinebandele@gmail.com. In February I'll be holding auditions for various roles. I'm getting a lot of support on this project and I can't wait to start Production and Post (my favs).

Next week I'll be purchasing the Panasonic DVX100B! And a little bit after I should be purchasing a 35mm Adapter called the RNG35, which makes shots look sexy because of the shallow depth of field it gives off, below is a test from someone else's DVX100B.

And here is a fantastic comparision of an image with and without the adapters.

I also just purchased this lightsaber hilt in preparation for the Lightsaber Chreography Competition VII. I'm going to be busing (Greyhound) way out to Ohio this spring to perform, shoot and edit my entry this year with last year's third place winners.

I didn't even mention I'm 19 now. I turned last Saturday.

I just realized my blog entries really suck now. I swear I'll do better. I'm just being really lazy. I don't need pictures and photographs for a blog!

Commentary: If you have not seen it, drop everything you are doing ... go get a free 2 week subscription to Netflix and rent it ... or better yet, when it come back out in theaters in a short few weeks ... watch it! Twice.

2. The Wackness
Commentary: Critics were very mixed about this one but I loved this coming-of-age story a whole lot. I didn't expect a performance like that from Josh Peck.

3. Wall-E
Commentary: If the first thirty minutes of a film can capture me completely without any dialogue what's-so-ever ... I'm sold.

4. Let The Right One In
Commentary: Please, if you were thinking of going to see Twilight but were on the fence of seeing it at all, go see this film first. You'll have to read some subtitles but it's well worth it ... or you can wake until the American version comes out in two years which is bound to not do this justice.

5. Slumdog Millionaire
Commentary: This film got me really teary eyed at the end of it all. I'm a sucker for a love story (I could call The Wackness a bit of a love story too).

1. Fallout 3
Commentary: I don't usually like RPGs but when action is thrown in I'll eat it all up (i.e. Kingdom Hearts). Plus, Fallout 3 is open-world and you really do live in the world. You could just be starting the game and meet an enemy who three times your level and will wipe you out with one easy shot to the head.

2. Left 4 Dead
Commentary: Best co-op mutliplayer I have EVER played. I really admire a game that relies completely on teamwork. I've played a bit online and you MUST watch each others back to get through each level ... or the zombies will getcha!

3. Grand Theft Auto IV
Commentary: I love the series, it has been getting progressively better. No different here.

4. Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Commentary: I've got to admit I don't play this game much unless it's with friends. Playing online is impossible because the connection falls out every few matches.

5. Rock Band 2
Commentary: I haven't played many games this year so my top 5 is actually really lacking in my opinion. I put Rock Band 2 up as a technicality. I didn't even own this game. Played it once and I really liked it.

Judge Says Fox Owns Rights to a Warner Movie

LOS ANGELES — In a surprise ruling, a federal judge in Los Angeles said he intended to grant 20th Century Fox’s claim that it owns a copyright interest in the “Watchmen,” a movie shot by Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures and set for release in March.

The decision was disclosed in a five-page written order issued on Wednesday. Gary A. Feess, a judge in the United States District Court for Central California, said he would provide a more detailed order soon.

Fox has been seeking to prevent Warner from releasing the film. The superhero adventure, based on the “Watchmen” graphic novel, is being directed by Zack Snyder (who also directed “300”) and has shaped up as one of most eagerly anticipated releases for next year.

A Warner spokesman, Scott Rowe, declined to comment on the ruling and the studio’s plans.

At an earlier hearing, the judge said he believed that issues in the case could be settled only at a trial, which was scheduled for late January. On Wednesday, however, Judge Feess said he had reconsidered and concluded that Fox should prevail on crucial issues.

“Fox owns a copyright interest consisting of, at the very least, the right to distribute the ‘Watchmen’ motion picture,” the ruling said.

Fox acquired rights to the “Watchmen” graphic novel in the late 1980s for the producer Lawrence Gordon, but eventually dropped its own plan to make a movie from its story, about the underside of life for superbeings.

Mr. Gordon later pursued the project with Universal Pictures, and then with Paramount Pictures, before shooting it with Warner and Legendary under an arrangement that allows Paramount to distribute the film abroad.

In ruling on Wednesday, Judge Feess advised both Fox and Warner to look toward a settlement or an appeal.

“The parties may wish to turn their efforts from preparing for trial to negotiating a resolution of this dispute or positioning the case for review,” he said.

My thoughts: Fox has every right to do what they are doing. I just hope they continue to release the film, even if it's under their name.

How this affects Harry Potter:

So Fox now owns the rights to "Watchmen" the new film adaptation of the graphic novel, which is easily one of the most anticipated comic book movies of next year. To make a long story short, Warner Brothers financed the film and was planning to distribute in March but on December 24th a Los Angeles judge gave the rights to Fox. Essentially, this means Warner Brothers made a free film for Fox to distribute and profit from. How does this effect Harry Potter?

I think this is one of the larger reasons why Half Blood Prince was pushed back because Warner Brothers was anticipating this would happen. They spent a lot of money in "Watchmen" and they will make no profit, now Half Blood Prince will have to make that all up.
